Waterfront Decking Is a Different Discipline Than Backyard Decking

A deck at the water's edge lives in a harsher world than a deck off a kitchen door: constant moisture wicking up from below, reflected UV off the water doubling sun exposure, and — on many of our projects — framing that stands on pilings over the water itself. Building it like a backyard deck is how you get soft joists at year eight. We build decks as a marine contractor: environment-treated framing (2.5 CCA saltwater, .60 freshwater, .40 land contact), hot-dip galvanized or stainless connections, and footings or pilings appropriate to the ground they stand on.

That marine DNA opens up what's possible. Because we drive our own piles, we can carry decks out over the water, step them down bluffs and bulkheads, and tie deck, dock, and shoreline into one continuous outdoor space rather than three disconnected projects by three contractors.

Design-wise, waterfront decks earn their keep as living space: curved edges and built-in bench seating that follow the shoreline, multi-level platforms that separate dining from lounging, integrated stairs to the dock, and railing choices that preserve the water view instead of caging it.

Choosing a Deck Surface: Composite vs. Hardwood vs. Treated Pine

Composite decking — we install MoistureShield, the only composite we consider proven for wet environments — is the low-maintenance choice: no splinters, no sealing, high fade resistance, and consistent color for decades. It costs more per foot up front and pays it back in every year you don't spend a weekend staining. MoistureShield's solid-core construction can even be installed in ground- and water-contact applications where hollow composites fail, which matters on true waterfront work.

Hardwoods deliver a natural, premium look with excellent density and lifespan, at the cost of periodic oiling to hold their color. Treated radius-edge pine remains the value benchmark — durable, repairable, and easily refreshed with stain — provided the treatment retention matches the environment, which is exactly the detail we never compromise.

Whatever the surface, the frame beneath is treated structural timber sized for waterfront loads and moisture. A composite board warranted for 40 years is worthless on a frame that rots in 15; we build so the whole assembly ages together.
